In the carbon experience: water is life. Life is memory. And the lake is not a drop.
Lake is an insoluble pigment made from the combination and separation of organic soluble dye made from roots, leaves, and flowers; with metallic salts such as aluminum, copper, and iron.
Small batches of hand-processed lake pigment and plant resin are mulled together to create artisan watercolor paints which are unique to the time and place in which they were prepared.
It took more than 2000 hours to produce the more than 700 individual batches of pigment made in this collection using local post-consumer materials and traditional natural dyes.
Lake study is a multi-disciplinary project attempting the demonstration of synthesis and integration of practices from a variety of fields and cultures, and the transformation of integrated experience into new forms.
It is the quiet voice in a roar of pain. It is the scream in the silence of death. It is a statement of “I was here,” that remains after. It is the collective of artifacts that remain for consideration and contemplation, after a rebirth.
